For the past 20 years, Magic Christmas in Lights has become a cherished holiday tradition for many families along the Gulf Coast. A visit to Bellingrath Gardens and Home during the Christmas season means a chance to stroll through 65 acres of dazzling lights — a truly magical experience!

Of course, such an extensive display doesn’t happen overnight. But did you know that the holiday light show takes about 12 weeks to install throughout the Gardens, starting right after Labor Day? Or that Bellingrath has two full-time staff members who work exclusively on the show, year-round?

Bellingrath workers began the first phase of hanging the 20th anniversary Magic Christmas in Lights on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at the Underwater Garden, the bamboo pathway near the ExxonMobil and Dwight Harrigan Ecological Bayou Boardwalk.

The work began a week earlier than usual this year, because Bellingrath has planned several additional scenes to commemorate the 20th anniversary.

The light show installation is carefully scheduled in order to create as little disruption as possible for visitors, who are unlikely to notice many changes in the Gardens until early November.

Magic Christmas in Lights will be open from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27, 2015, through Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016. Magic Christmas in Lights will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

  2. are there complimentary wheel chairs available for use of the handicapped and/or elderly? We would like to bring my 91 yea old mother. Although she is able to walk well on her own, I don’t know that she would be able to last the entire walk….

    1. Please do bring her! We have manual wheelchairs available on a first-come, first-served basis, for a $5 rental fee.
