Wonderful Wednesdays

Wednesdays from June 7 to August 2, 2023

Who knew that summertime Wednesdays could be so wonderful? Join us June through August for Wonderful Wednesdays, a fun, informative series on gardening, history and more. Unless otherwise noted, admission is $15 for adults, $9 for ages 5-12 and free for Friends of Bellingrath members and to children ages 4 and younger. Unless otherwise noted, all sessions will begin in the Magnolia Café.

June 7Beautiful Objects with a Colorful Past

A Look at the Provenance of Bessie Bellingrath’s Collection. The Bellingrath Home is filled with furniture, silver and porcelain which was purchased from both individuals and prominent antique dealers from New Orleans to New York. Fortunately a great number of them came with a history of who owned them originally, from English aristocrats to impoverished Southerners during the Great Depression. Join Tom McGehee as he shares a look at beautiful objects in the Bellingrath Home and the colorful individuals who once owned them.

June 14Kid’s Gulf Discovery Day

Learn about the ecology of the Gulf Coast from a variety of regional environmental organizations. Activities will include Raptor Shows by the Mobile Environmental Center, presentations by the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, and more!

June 21Summer Garden Walk

Join Bellingrath’s Horticultural Management team for our annual guided tour of the Gardens to see the wonderful summer displays, floral borders and new additions. Stay for lunch and check out the new merchandise in the Gift Shop.

June 28“In the Language of Flowers”

A Floral demonstration by Gail Z. McCain. Learn the special meaning of flowers and herbs as Gail demonstrates how to make a tussie mussie. Fun to make, simple hand tied nosegays or bouquets are versatile and practical floral arrangements. Learn to make a simple wrap technique and receive a list of floral meanings so you can later add a message to your own creations. What a great way to express your thoughts and feelings, whether humorous or serious.

July 12Introduction to Alabama Native Plants

When Bessie and Walter Bellingrath developed Bellingrath Gardens, a site rich with native Alabama plants was transformed into the gardens we know and love today. Although there are many non-native plants that grace our gardens, there are also plenty of natives to be found here. Join Todd as he highlights and discusses plants native to southern Alabama that can either be found at Bellingrath or in adjacent locales and that can be grown to enrich your own personal gardens and landscapes.

July 19Paint Party at Bellingrath

Paint your favorite Bellingrath Garden scenes and flowers with artists Renee Wallace and Janie Brown.

July 26Viewing the Summer Sky

Members of the University of South Alabama Department of
Physics will give a presentation before leading everyone to the Great Lawn. Telescopes will be set up on the lawn to hunt for deep sky objects and they will point out the visible constellations. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars to this viewing.
