Wonderful Wednesdays

Who knew Wednesdays could be so wonderful? Each summer, Bellingrath Gardens and Home hosts a series of lectures and workshops helping Gulf Coast gardeners and enthusiasts make the most of our extended growing season. Each workshop covers a special feature of the Gardens or Home, tips for making your garden more spectacular or guest lectures and workshops from renowned members of the horticultural and gardening world.

Unless otherwise noted, all programs are $13 for adults, $7.50 for children and free for Friends of Bellingrath members and children ages 4 and younger.

June 13Kids Gulf Discovery Day — Learn about the wildlife and ecology of the Gulf Coast from a variety of environmental organizations. The Environmental Studies Center will bring their Raptor Road Show to
engage and educate guests about the wonders of native birds of prey. Visitors may also take a cruise along the beautiful Fowl River with our friends from Delta Safaris! Space is limited and reservations are required for the cruises, so be sure to make your reservations early.

June 20Viewing the Summer Sky at Bellingrath Gardens — Do not miss this very special evening astronomy program led by members of the University of South Alabama Department of Physics. Following a brief lecture in the Magnolia Room, guests will gather on the Great Lawn to view the night sky. Telescopes will be set up to view planets and constellations. Guests are encouraged to bring binoculars and flashlights.7-9 PMFree for members

June 27Growing Cascade Mums — See what goes into putting on the largest outdoor display of cascading mums in the country. Chuck Owens, Bellingrath’s Horticulturist, will show you how we grow our famous cascades, columns and spheres. He will also lead a behind-the-scenes tour through Bellingrath’s mum growing operation. Participants will receive a mum and directions for growing their own cascades. 10:30–11:30 AMFree for members

July 11Knives, Forks and Spoons: A Look at Unique Silver Serving Pieces in The Bellingrath Collection — Serving utensils are designed to cut, spear, scoop, grasp, spread, strain and transfer food from plates, trays, platters and bowls. Over the years, the original purpose of many of these uniquely designed pieces has been lost or forgotten. Tom McGehee, Curator of the Bellingrath Museum Home, will help us decode some of the mysteries of Mrs. Bellingrath’s silver serving pieces. If you have a mystery piece at home, bring it – he may be able to determine what it is!10:30–11:30 AMFree for members

July 18Garden Trends 2018: Creating Outdoor Living Spaces — Exterior Designer Catherine Arensberg of “simple.honest.design” is passionate about designing luxurious spaces on real life budgets. She will show you how to create outdoor living spaces that are natural extensions of your home’s interior design and reflect how you and your family live. 10:30–11:30 AMFree for members

July 25Christmas In July Workshop and Tour — Go behind the scenes of Bellingrath’s famous Magic Christmas in Lights show and learn how you can create your own magic from our experts. Guests may select a metal frame created by our team and then learn how to attach lights to decorate the piece. All materials will be supplied and are included in the cost of the program. A salad/sandwich buffet lunch is also included. Space is limited and reservations are required to attend, so be sure to make your reservation early for this one-of-a-kind workshop! 10:30 AM–1 PMMembers:
