In honor of the 80th Anniversary of the Bellingrath Home, guests are invited to join Museum Director Tom McGehee as he conducts special tours of the Museum Home. Each tour highlights a particular feature of the Home’s decorative arts. Guests may attend the tours of their choosing. Space is limited and reservations are required. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to tour start to allow time to walk from the entrance to the Bellingrath Home.
June 7: 10:30 AM & 2:30 PM: Highlights of the Porcelain Collection
Delve into the world of European ceramics and discover the diverse types of porcelain on display in the Bellingrath Home. The collection includes examples made in Europe’s finest porcelain factories including Meissen (est. 1710) and Sevres (est. 1738). Many depict mythological or allegorical themes as well as countless floral scenes. As you embark on a journey through time, Tom will share the stories behind these treasures and their colorful histories.
June 14: 10:30 AM & 2:30 PM: Highlights of the Silver Collection
Discover the incredible collection of antique silver that Bessie Morse Bellingrath acquired from prominent dealers ranging from New Orleans to New York. The Bellingrath Collection includes masterpieces created by some of the world’s most renowned English and American silversmiths over two centuries. From the hallmarked silver of Georgian England to early 20th century sterling flatware, these objects reflect a gracious era in fine dining, which has nearly vanished today. Tom will share the interesting and sometimes amusing stories behind them.
June 21: 10:30 AM & 2:30 PM: Highlights of the Furniture Collection
Tom will take you on an exciting tour about the wide array of 19th century furniture made across the globe, from the United States, France, England and even China. The pieces featured in the fifteen-room Home reflect a variety of furniture styles, created for the fashionable homes of that time. Receive an engaging lesson on a wide variety of furniture styles created over two centuries. Learn about their unique and original purpose; you will leave knowing the difference between an ”étagère” and a “what not.”
June 28: 10:30 AM & 2:30 PM: Highlights of the Glass Collection
Gain a new appreciation for the work of English and American glassblowers after viewing Bessie Bellingrath’s extravagant glass collection that ranges from pattern glass to fine crystal. Find out the history of Waterford Crystal and why there is none of it in Mrs. Bellingrath’s collection on Tom’s final Tuesday Tour.
Tuesday Tour tickets include admission into Bellingrath Gardens and are $9.00 for members of the Friends of Bellingrath and $21.00 for non-members. Reservations are required as space is limited.
