DESCRIPTION:In June of 1934\, the Bellingrath’s embarked on a trip west which was carefully documented by Amelia Moore Edgar\, a niece by marriage. Traveling in a pre-interstate world in a new 12-cylinder Cadillac with frequent blow-outs\, dusty roads and no air conditioning was an adventure none of those passengers would ever forget. From an Alaskan cruise to a visit to Hollywood\, the diary includes wonderful descriptions and will be paired with images of many of the places visited on their Trip of a Lifetime. SUMMARY:Night Sky Series: September Skies
DESCRIPTION:Members of the University of South Alabama Department of Physics will give a presentation\, and set up the telescopes on The Great Lawn. They will set up a telescope to hunt for deep sky objects and point out the visible constellations. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars to this viewing. Also\, there are several free apps for smart phones available that identify stars\, constellations and planets by pointing the smart phone to a direction in the sky. The skies around Bellingrath Gardens have less light pollution than nearby larger towns so dimmer stars will be visible. \nSunset in Mobile\, Alabama on September 16\, 2026 will be at 6:56 PM with Astronomical Twilight at 8:17 PM. A talk will be presented from 6:40 PM to 7:10 PM. Plan to arrive at our River Pavilion at least 10 minutes before its departure.\nThe Reptile Bus with Outdoors with Jay – Reptile trailer with a variety of snakes\, lizards\, turtles\, and an opportunity for participants to touch a snake; a snake safety/reptile presentation at 10:45 am\nAWF Delta and Bay Conservation Center – Reptile and amphibian ambassadors\, a variety of mammal pelts and skull replicas\, including a presentation discussing keystone and indicator species and how they influence and reflect their environment\, offered at 9:15 am\, 10:15 am\, 11:15\, and 12:15 pm.\nBellingrath Gardens & Home NatureNauts™ – Hands-on activity relating to nature and the Gardens\nEvonik – Chemistry-focused hands-on activity\nScouting America – Static Display\, Video\, Ocean Habitat Mini Reef\, Offshore Safety Gear\nRebuilding Together of South Alabama – Demonstration on a rain barrel.
