SUMMARY:China Mania with Tom McGehee
DESCRIPTION:As our visitors enter the Bellingrath Kitchen there seems to be a magnetic pull towards the glittering wall of china displayed in the Butler’s Pantry. Here are dinner and tea services\, gumbo bowls\, a hot chocolate set and elegant service plates. They date from the start of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th and were created in England\, France\, Germany\, Czechoslovakia\, and the United States. \nWhen were they made\, where were they purchased and how were they used in the Bellingrath Home? How did the sale of china in the United States evolve and how did the establishment of the bridal registry add to its explosion? \nJoin Museum Director Tom McGehee as we explore this colorful collection. \nMember: Free | Non-member: Gardens Admission \nPlan Your Visit\n\nDate: July 8\, 2026\nTime: 10:00 AM – 11:30 PM\nLocation: Magnolia Room\nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Lies the Tour Guide Told Me: with Tom McGehee
DESCRIPTION:Well-meaning tour guides in historic homes have been known to embellish the stories surrounding a house and its occupants. These “facts” seem to take on a life of their own and are passed on to the next generation\, which adds even more embellishments. \nAs a result\, generations have learned that console tables backed with mirrors were designed so ladies could check their petticoats\, that old houses never had closets and that the purpose of fire screens was to prevent a lady’s beeswax makeup from melting. \nWe will look at these tall tales and then discuss how the story of the Bellingrath Home and its contents have dramatically evolved over the last 50 years. The program is included with regular Gardens admission\, and it’s free for Bellingrath members. \nPlan Your Visit\n\nDate: August 19\, 2026\nTime: 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM\nLocation: Magnolia Room\nPurchase Tickets
