SUMMARY:Ink & Insight: Author Joe Cuhaj
DESCRIPTION:Joe Cuhaj is a Navy veteran and former radio personality turned author and freelance writer. His first book\, Hike America Alabama (later renamed Hiking Alabama) was published in 2000 by Globe Pequot Press. That was the beginning of Joe’s writing career. Since that time\, Joe has authored 13 outdoor recreational guides on hiking\, paddling\, and camping in Alabama and the Gulf Coast. \nJoe has also written seven nonfiction history books for Prometheus Books\, Arcadia Publishing\, and History Press\, on a wide variety of subjects including space exploration\, little known American history\, and titles covering the history of Mobile\, Alabama\, and Alabama. \nJoe’s latest books include The Pig War and the Pelican Girls (2024\, Prometheus Books) that tells little known\, forgotten\, and obscure tales of American history. Joe also has another book coming out on October 14\, 2025\, Notable Alabama Women\, a biography of 50 women from the state or who came to the state and made a difference not only in Alabama\, but the world. \nJoe is now working on a cozy mystery series set in a radio station in a Gulf Coast port city in 1943. Just after sunset\, Jupiter will shine nearly overhead\, and several telescopes will be trained on the giant planet for a chance to spot its four largest moons: Io\, Europa\, Ganymede\, and Callisto. \nWe’ll also look for brilliant seasonal stars and constellations\, including Arcturus\, Spica\, Regulus\, Denebola\, Vega\, Betelgeuse\, Rigel\, Capella\, Castor\, and Pollux. For those eager to explore deeper into space\, we’ll hunt for distant deep-sky objects such as the Sombrero Galaxy (M104)\, elliptical galaxies M84 and M86\, and in Orion\, the Orion Nebula (M42) and M78. In this hands-on workshop at Bellingrath Gardens and Home\, you’ll learn how to create your own kokedama—literally translated as “moss ball”—by shaping a special soil mixture around the roots of a plant\, wrapping it in moss\, and securing it with twine. Kokedama can be displayed on decorative trays or suspended for a striking hanging garden effect. This centuries-old technique is rooted in the Japanese tradition of wabi-sabi\, which finds beauty in imperfection and natural simplicity. All supplies are included\, and each participant will take home their own handcrafted kokedama.
